About the Installation:
“Faded Memories of Home” immerses you in the heart-wrenching narrative of the residential school experience. At its core, the exhibit recreates a colonial classroom, featuring nine meticulously rebuilt residential school desks. Within each of these desks lies a powerful symbol of the lost connections and shattered lives – photographs of children’s families. As you navigate the rows of desks, these images gradually disappear, poignantly illustrating the profound loss of identities, families, culture, and language.
Tom Wilson, the brilliant mind behind this installation, is not only a musician but also a visual artist and writer of novels and non-fiction. His own personal journey adds a deeply personal layer to this exhibit. At the age of fifty-three, he discovered that he was adopted, and his true heritage is Kahnawake Mohawk. Furthermore, the woman he had grown up believing was his aunt was, in fact, his mother. Wilson’s exploration of his own white upbringing against the backdrop of his newfound family and culture is a compelling story that resonates with many.
