Canadian Chamber Choir

The celebrated Canadian Chamber Choir (CCC), renowned for their sublime harmonies and deeply moving performances, is set to make their triumphant return to Kingston for the first time since 2019. The CCC’s comeback promises an immersive musical journey, drawing inspiration from water – a motif carrying deep symbolism in diverse cultures across Canada. The event is slated for July 16th, at 7:30 PM at the majestic Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts.

This ensemble of musicians, known for their artistic excellence, which earned them a JUNO nomination, will grace the stage with an all-Canadian program. The choir will perform original works by acclaimed composers such as Hussein Janmohamed, Carmen Braden, and Jeff Enns. Each composer brings a unique perspective and draws from different cultural backgrounds and traditions, enhancing the melodic tapestry woven on stage.

Hussein Janmohamed, an Ismaili-Canadian composer, contributes his knack for fusing Western choral techniques with Ismaili devotional music, exploring themes of spiritual and cultural intersectionality. Carmen Braden, a Whitehorse-based composer, channels her deep connection to the north, resonating the grandeur of Arctic landscapes in her compositions. Jeff Enns, renowned for his emotive and lush pieces, brings a touch of old-world charm and enchantment with his inspirational work.

Adding to the vibrancy of the evening will be creative adaptations of Canadian classics from iconic musicians like Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot. The choir’s fresh interpretations will breathe new life into these timeless pieces, resonating a chorus of shared memories and collective Canadian identity.

The musical night will be further illuminated by the special guest collaborator, Sherryl Sewepagham. As a Cree-Dene singer and composer, Sewepagham’s work beautifully showcases the Indigenous influence in Canadian music. Her distinct style—imbued with the rhythm of her heritage—will weave together the rich tapestry of Canadian multiculturalism, augmenting the emotional depth and sonic textures of the evening’s repertoire.

The Canadian Chamber Choir’s concert is not merely a performance—it is a journey. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the diverse cultural influences that have shaped and continue to shape the Canadian musical landscape. Each piece resonates with an emotive pull, connecting the audience to the cultural nuances that inform and enhance the Canadian musical ethos.

Be ready to be serenaded by the harmonious collision of cultures, awash in the magnificent waves of music that the CCC and their collaborators will cast upon the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Don’t miss this chance to dive into a sea of emotive soundscapes and cultural richness. Reserve your spot for a memorable evening steeped in the diverse expressions of Canadian heritage.
