Turmeric Anthotype Prints Workshop

Celebrate the longest day of the year with a splash of yellow and a dash of creativity at the Turmeric Anthotype Prints Workshop. On Thursday, June 20th, from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, join Meenakashi, the Tett Artist-in-Residence, for an immersive experience in the art of natural printmaking. Participants will explore the fascinating process of using turmeric—a spice revered not only for its bold color and use in Indian cuisine but also for its light-sensitive properties—to create stunning visual prints. This unique workshop will unlock the secrets of the anthotype technique, an eco-friendly printmaking process that dates back to the 19th century, utilizing the sun’s rays to capture beautiful, ephemeral images on paper and fabric.

During this hands-on session, each attendee will have the opportunity to produce three original turmeric prints, gaining valuable insight into the natural behaviors of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric that reacts to light. This workshop is perfect for anyone aged 16 and older who is interested in photography, natural crafts, or simply looking for a new artistic skill to learn. As the summer sun sets on the horizon, participants will not only walk away with their unique creations but also with a new appreciation for the beauty of nature’s palette and the historical techniques that continue to inspire contemporary art.
