The Great White Hurricane of 1913

What happens when nature unleashes its fury with no warning, no mercy, and no escape? On a cold November day in 1913, the Great Lakes region faced that terrifying question—and paid a devastating price.

Join the Great Lakes Museum for a riveting deep dive into The Great White Hurricane of 1913, the deadliest storm ever recorded on the Great Lakes. This powerful storm struck with little warning, leaving a trail of destruction that changed maritime history forever. Over the course of three relentless days, more than 30 ships sank, and over 250 sailors were lost to the icy depths. Entire fleets vanished. Communication systems failed. And coastal communities could only watch in horror as the fury of wind, waves, and snow swallowed everything in its path.

This presentation unpacks the story of the storm from the perspective of meteorologists, mariners, and historians. Why did no one see it coming? What made this storm so uniquely violent? And what lessons did we learn from the tragedy that still shape modern weather forecasting and shipping safety today?

The Great White Hurricane of 1913 is part of the Lifelong Learning Club, a fascinating speaker series designed for curious minds. Each session includes an engaging talk by museum staff or guest presenters, followed by a lively discussion—all with coffee, tea, and light refreshments.

This session takes place on Monday, January 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Admission is just $6 and includes full access to the museum. Advance registration is recommended, as space is limited and demand is often high for these unique historical deep dives.

Don’t miss your chance to revisit one of the most haunting and unforgettable stories in Canada’s maritime past.

Come for the history—stay for the conversation.
