Providence – Theatrical Premiere on the K&P Trail
Commencing the 11th season of The Kick & Push Festival is the highly anticipated world premiere of Providence, an original site-specific play written and directed by acclaimed Kingston theatre-maker Craig Walker, and performed by the Eye of the Dawn Collective.
Set in the summer of 1875, on the eve of the Kingston & Pembroke Railway’s opening, Providence unfolds on the very ground where history was made. The story follows a work crew of three immigrant labourers, a girl, and the mother of two of the men—each grappling with the ghosts of their pasts as they shape the uncertain promise of their future. These characters, like many real-life settlers of the time, are caught between worlds—haunted by the violence of the old country and navigating the tensions of a new homeland.
The inspiration for Providence came from a mysterious photo on a K&P Trail information sign—three rail workers with a young girl sitting before them. Who were they? Why the photo? From these questions emerges a poignant and powerful new Canadian play about labour, legacy, and land.
📍Location: The K&P Trail at Hickson and Hagerman Avenues — one of the last remaining original stretches of track from the old “Kick & Push” line.
