IceCube Masterclass Explore the Universe Beneath the Ice

What if one of the most advanced observatories on Earth wasn’t in space… but buried deep beneath Antarctic ice?

The IceCube Masterclass, presented by the McDonald Institute, invites high school and early undergraduate students to dive into one of the most fascinating scientific experiments in the world — the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

This full-day, immersive workshop explores the cutting-edge physics, engineering, and operations behind a cubic-kilometre detector embedded deep beneath the South Pole. IceCube is designed to detect neutrinos — tiny, nearly invisible particles that pass through matter and carry secrets from some of the most extreme environments in the universe.

Participants will gain insight into how scientists use this extraordinary observatory to study cosmic events, probe the mysteries of dark matter, and better understand the fundamental structure of the universe. It’s a rare opportunity to connect with real-world science that is actively shaping our understanding of space and physics today.

Students can choose between two formats, making the experience accessible no matter where you are:
• In-Person Workshop: April 11, 2026 (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
Includes lunch and hands-on learning opportunities
• Virtual Workshop: April 18, 2026 (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

Best of all, this program is completely free, making it an incredible opportunity for students interested in science, engineering, or exploring future academic and career paths.
