Dance has a unique way of bringing people together. It crosses language barriers, builds confidence, sparks joy, and creates meaningful connections through movement. On Saturday, August 22, the Tett Centre for Creativity & Learning invites adults to experience all of that and more during Creative Connections Lab Session #6: Finding Rhythm & Community Through Afro Dance.
Led by artist and facilitator Edem Abbeyquaye, this welcoming and energetic workshop introduces participants to the vibrant rhythms and expressive movements of Afro Dance in a supportive, inclusive environment. Designed specifically for beginners and dancers of all experience levels, the session encourages participants to move at their own pace while discovering the joy of creative expression through music and movement.
Throughout the morning, Edem will guide participants through accessible foundational Afro Dance steps and rhythms before building toward a simple choreographed routine that everyone will perform together at the end of the workshop. Along the way, participants are also encouraged to improvise, explore their own movement, and connect with the music in ways that feel authentic and comfortable.
Far more than a dance class, Finding Rhythm & Community Through Afro Dance is about creating space for people to connect with themselves and with one another. Through shared movement and creativity, participants can build confidence, reduce stress, and experience the powerful sense of belonging that comes from moving together as a community.
This workshop is part of the Creative Connections Lab, an innovative initiative from the Tett Centre for Creativity & Learning that offers free, artist-led experiences designed to increase access to the arts for adults who may face barriers to participation. Each Creative Connections Lab session explores a different art form while encouraging self-expression, fostering meaningful social connections, and helping reduce social isolation.
Accessibility is a cornerstone of the program. The Tett Centre offers American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and second-language translation for participants who require additional supports. Those needing accessibility accommodations are encouraged to register by August 14 so arrangements can be made.
Participation is completely free, but space is limited to just 30 participants to ensure an engaging and supportive learning environment. Whether you’re looking to try something new, meet new people, reconnect with your creativity, or simply enjoy moving to uplifting music, this workshop offers a welcoming place to do exactly that.
