A Modern Journey of Creative Exchange in China

Art, travel, and ancient history intertwine in Silk Road Diaries: A Modern Journey of Creative Exchange in China, an intimate artist talk that explores how place, culture, and collaboration can permanently reshape creative practice.

On Wednesday, January 28, artist Michelle Reid invites audiences into her experience participating in the Silk Road: International Artists’ Rendezvous, a contemporary exchange inspired by one of history’s most influential cultural corridors. Over the course of this 40-minute presentation, Reid traces her journey through Dunhuang, Jiayuguan, and the breathtaking Mogao Caves, where centuries of art, faith, and human movement converge within carved stone and painted walls.

Reid reflects on how the desert’s shifting light, expansive landscapes, and deep historical presence transformed the way she perceives colour, texture, and form in her own work. Central to the talk are the human connections forged along the way, including collaboration with artists from around the world and a memorable impromptu painting session using pigments mixed from local soil. These shared creative moments highlight how art continues to act as a universal language, bridging cultures and experiences across time.

Following the presentation, guests are invited to take part in a Q&A, offering space for conversation about artistic process, cultural exchange, and how travel can profoundly influence creative identity.

This event is open to ages 13+ and operates on a By Donation / Pay-What-You-Can basis. All proceeds from the artist talk will be generously donated to the Tett Centre for Creativity & Learning, supporting the growth of Kingston’s vibrant creative community. Donations over $20 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
