Wreck of the George A. Marsh

Wreck of the George A. Marsh

Beneath the surface of Lake Ontario lies a story locked in darkness for more than a century. On a violent night in August 1917, the George A. Marsh battled brutal winds and towering waves for nearly ten relentless hours before finally succumbing to the lake’s power. Now resting silently on the lakebed, the wreck has become a time capsule of Great Lakes maritime history, preserving echoes of a dramatic final voyage.

On Monday, January 19, 2026, the Lifelong Learning Club at the Great Lakes Museum invites curious minds to explore this haunting chapter of local history. From 10:30 to 11:30 AM, guests will hear firsthand from Guillaume Courcy, owner of Neptune & Salacia Diving, who descended into the depths of Lake Ontario to explore the wreck in near-total darkness. His presentation offers rare insight into the condition of the ship, the challenges of deep-water wreck diving, and the remarkable discoveries hidden below the surface.

Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to examine artifacts recovered from the George A. Marsh, now part of the Museum’s collection. These objects bridge past and present, transforming abstract history into something tangible and deeply human. Each artifact carries the weight of the ship’s final hours and the lives connected to it.

The Lifelong Learning Club meets every other Monday at the Great Lakes Museum and is designed for adults who love history, discovery, and thoughtful conversation. Whether you’re fascinated by shipwrecks, Great Lakes lore, or underwater exploration, this session offers a compelling window into a story rarely seen.
