Salsa in the Square Returns to Downtown Kingston
Looking for a fun way to spend your Tuesday evenings this summer? Grab a friend, bring your dancing shoes, or simply come ready to learn as Salsa in the Square returns to Springer Market Square for another exciting season of free outdoor dancing, music, and community.
The festivities kick off on Tuesday, July 7, with a special launch celebration that promises to transform downtown Kingston into a lively Latin dance party. The evening begins with a free salsa lesson from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, giving beginners and experienced dancers alike the chance to learn new moves or brush up on old favourites. No partner or previous dance experience is required, making this one of the most welcoming and accessible summer events in the city.
Following the lesson, the energy shifts into high gear as Los Garcias take the stage from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM, filling Springer Market Square with vibrant live Latin music that will have dancers and spectators alike moving to the rhythm. After the performance, the dancing continues with open social dancing and group line dances, creating a festive atmosphere that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together.
The July 7 launch marks the beginning of an eight-week series running every Tuesday from July 7 through August 25. Each week starts with a free dance lesson from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, followed by social dancing from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Throughout the summer, participants will have opportunities to explore several popular Latin dance styles, including Salsa, Bachata, and Kizomba.
Salsa remains the world’s most popular partner dance, originating in Cuba before becoming a global phenomenon. Bachata, with its roots in the Dominican Republic, offers a slower, more romantic style focused on smooth movements and musical expression. Kizomba, originating in Angola, has captivated dancers around the world with its flowing rhythms, close partner connection, and soulful music.
Beyond learning new dance steps, Salsa in the Square is about building community. It’s a chance to meet new people, enjoy Kingston’s beautiful downtown, stay active, and experience the joy that comes from dancing outdoors on warm summer evenings. Whether you arrive ready to dance all night or simply want to watch the fun unfold, the welcoming atmosphere makes everyone feel like part of the celebration.
If you’ve ever wanted to try Latin dancing, there’s no better place to start than right in the heart of downtown Kingston.
