Poetry by the Lake

Sometimes all it takes is a quiet shoreline, the gentle rhythm of the waves, and a blank page to spark something extraordinary. This July, Poetry by the Lake invites writers, dreamers, and curious minds to slow down, connect with nature, and explore the art of poetry in two inspiring outdoor workshops along Kingston’s beautiful waterfront.

Led by Kingston-based poet and instructor Barbara Lorraine Laing (PhD, OCT), these guided two-hour workshops are designed to help participants unlock their creativity in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Whether you’ve been writing poetry for years or have never written a single poem, Poetry by the Lake is open to all experience levels. The emphasis isn’t on criticism or perfection. Instead, it’s about creating, experimenting, observing, and discovering your own unique voice.

Participants can choose between two picturesque locations or attend both sessions for an even richer creative experience.

The first workshop takes place on Wednesday, July 15, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Newlands Pavilion, located beside Richardson Beach. As the evening light reflects across Lake Ontario, participants will draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape while exploring creative writing prompts and guided exercises.

The second workshop is held on Sunday, July 26, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM under the Picnic Shelter at Lake Ontario Park. The peaceful morning setting offers another opportunity to slow down, observe the natural world, and transform those moments into poetry.

One of the most appealing aspects of Poetry by the Lake is its supportive atmosphere. Rather than focusing on critique or technical perfection, Barbara encourages participants to enjoy the creative process, meet others with shared interests, and simply experience the pleasure of writing. It’s an ideal event for anyone looking to reconnect with creativity, spend time outdoors, or try something completely new.

Guests are welcome to bring a snack or even a picnic to enjoy before or after the workshop, making the experience feel even more relaxed and personal. The events will take place rain or shine, with reserved shelters ensuring everyone stays comfortable. Public washrooms are also available at both locations.

Whether you’re hoping to start a new creative hobby, overcome writer’s block, or simply spend a few peaceful hours by the water, Poetry by the Lake offers a refreshing and inspiring way to experience Kingston’s waterfront this summer.
