It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken A New Musical Featuring The Tragically Hip
A story of love, identity, and belonging — set to the soundtrack of a nation.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse presents It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken, a powerful new musical built around the iconic music of The Tragically Hip. Created in association with Theatre Aquarius, this original production blends storytelling and song into a deeply moving theatrical experience that captures the spirit of Canada through one of its most beloved bands.
Set in 2002, the story follows Waleed, an exiled journalist who arrives in Canada searching for a new beginning. When he meets Kate, a local record store owner, their connection is immediate and undeniable. But as life begins to pull them in different directions, they are forced to confront questions of duty, identity, and what it truly means to belong.
Woven throughout the narrative are some of The Tragically Hip’s most iconic songs, including “Bobcaygeon,” “Ahead by a Century,” “New Orleans Is Sinking,” “Wheat Kings,” “Grace, Too,” “Blow at High Dough,” and “Courage.” These songs are not simply featured — they become part of the storytelling fabric, elevating the emotional depth and resonance of the performance.
Directed by Mary Francis Moore, with a book by Ahmed Moneka and Jesse LaVercombe, and music supervision by Bob Foster, the production brings together an accomplished creative team to deliver a show that is both intimate and expansive. Through choreography, orchestration, and heartfelt performances, this musical invites audiences to reflect on connection, change, and the shared experiences that shape who we are.
