Fast Radio Cosmos

On March 23rd, 2023, attendees will have the privilege of hearing a talk titled “The Fast Radio Cosmos” from Professor Victoria Kaspi, the Principal Investigator of the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment fast radio burst (CHIME/FRB) team and a physics professor at McGill University. The talk will focus on Fast Radio Bursts, a mysterious cosmic phenomenon discovered by astronomers in 2007, consisting of short, intense blasts of radio waves arriving from outside our Milky Way galaxy. Roughly 1000 of these bursts arrive every day across the sky, and their origin remains unknown. Professor Kaspi will discuss what is presently known about this mystery and how a new radio telescope built in Canada, the CHIME/FRB, is revolutionizing the study of FRBs. The talk is part of the George and Maureen Ewan Lecture series, which was endowed in 2018 to promote scientific discourse and culture within the Particle Astrophysics community at Queen’s University and the broader Kingston community. This mask-friendly event is free and open to all ages, and presents an exciting opportunity to learn about one of the universe’s most intriguing mysteries.
