The Kingston Canadian Film Festival and Radioland Media are excited to present an evening
with award-winning writer-director Clarke Mackey (Til The Cows Come Home) who will share
excerpts from his new audio drama series The Makers and Shakers Society and answer
questions about the show.
The Makers and Shakers Society audio drama series premiered last week on CFRC 101.9 FM and
as a podcast.
It tells the story of Grace, Seth, Leah and Oliver who all come from very different
backgrounds. Inspired by Greta Thunberg, they meet in grade twelve at KCVI and become
climate activists. Each in their own way, they struggle to survive the climate apocalypse. A
climate-friendly government takes power in Ottawa, but is battered by backlash and scandal. By
2038, the four friends are forced to make hard choices.
It was produced entirely in Kingston with a local cast and crew. Written and directed by Clarke
Mackey, it uses speculative storytelling to ask questions about the near future, a future in which
unpredictable changes in the climate will have devastating effects on everyone.
Mackey spent years researching and writing The Makers and Shakers Society. In the tradition of
Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments, the series dramatizes a gripping,
realistic story about how ordinary, flawed people — our children and grandchildren — might
come to grips with the great upheavals of the century.
